Crochet equiv of Brioche or half-fisherman's?

My son has asked me to knit an afghan for his GF's b-day - in 3 wks! I know that is not happening, but I was thinking if I could crochet it, it would go faster. The afghan she wants (from a catalog, no pattern available) looks like it is a fisherman st, or half fisherman st, or maybe Brioche.
Anybody know a crochet st that makes something looking similar? It is for bulky cotton yarn.

Looking at the photo in the link, the closest I can think of seems like half-double stitches using double strands or bulky yarn.

Here is a close up of the stitching in a poncho I once did in double-stranded half-double crochet -- it looked similar to me.

I don't know what you mean by "angularity" -- if you wanted it to be more like ribbing, you could try a swatch with half-double crochet in back loops only?

ooh! That is good. Also, I just found a pic in S & B Happy Hooker, of herringbone half double crochet - it looks a lot like the blanket pic. I googled and got quite a few hits for videos, but none of them panned out. But I think the directions in S&B are fairly straightforward so I will give it a shot and report back!

Oh, and I just saw your comment on angularity - I mean, the yarn goes at an angle back and forth, not just straight up and down. If that makes sense!

The textured stripe seems like a close match including the diagonal "rib" in the stitch.

I found it on Ravelry as Textured Stripes Dishcloth by Kiel Lemon and she posted her pattern on her web site, Cocoa Cream’s Craft Closet

It just uses an alternating slip stitch and half-double crochet (HDC); you slip st into the top of a HDC and then HDC into the top of the next slip st.
I made a variation using two colors. The yellow in the following image has the diagonal ridges that I though of when I saw your pattern images.
