First, go to the Video page and look at Tips to watch Demo of a small project. That's an overview that shows how to go about getting your yarn on the needle then working a few rows and how to get the yarn off the needles. Then go to the individual parts - casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch and casting off.
There are several different cast ons you can choose from to learn, though the knit or cable CO are the easiest and longtail is a good one. The simple CO looks easy, but it's hard to knit into and isn't a good one for beginning a project.
You can stick with the knit st for a while, or just several rows, then add a purl row if you and. The Tips page also shows basic sts - stockinette, garter, ribbing and seed stitch. You can try any of those out in your practice project, or just stick with one. Then Casting off will show how to finish it and take the sts off then needles.
