Poncho

Hi everyone,have a question-can you knit your border then sew it on or is it better to pick up the stitches ?

Making a poncho for my grandson and I have to pick up 238 stitches around the border then work 9 rows rib, what I was thinking is casting on 238 stitches and working 9 rows of rib then casting them off and sewing the band to the poncho. ( I hate picking up stitches )

Or is there another way.

It's waaaaaay easier to pick up the sts and knit it on.
