help with needle size question
hi all,

i'm trying to make a sweater for the first time... and it calls for size 6 and size 7 (US) needles... i typically knit well to gauge with the needles called for, but i don't have size 7 needles, i only have size 8 and above ...

my question is...what is the downside of using a size 8 for the main part of the sweater versus a size 7?

thanks so much in advance!!!

You want to get gauge with whatever needle it takes to do that or the sweater will be too big (or small, but if you could get gauge on a 7 and used an 8 the result would be too big, not too small). You could possibly drop down a size (like make a medium instead of a large, do the math based on your swatch and see what you get) with the 8. It isn't much of a change, so the fabric might not be too loose. Personally I recommend swatching and using the needle you need to give you gauge even if it means buying a new needle. You could possibly knit tight and get gauge, but fooling with your natural tension is fraught with danger IMO.

There's probably ribbing or something that's knit on the size 7 and the main body and sleeves are knit on the 8, so you'd probably be okay. The ribbing may appear a little big on 8s, but may be alright.
