Silver Socks class help
For this sock, all I did was purl 2, knit a 4 stitch cable, purled 2 more, knit the center 16, purled 2, knit a 4 stitch cable (twisting in the opposite direction) and purled the last two. Then knit all stitches on the sole of the sock.

(I could have just as easily knit cables all the way across the top by doing a pattern like this: P2, Cable 4, P2, C4, P2, C4, P2, C4, P2, C4, P2)

what does knit a 4 stitch cable mean?
What am and how do I twist a 4 stitch cable in the opposite direction (what does this mean)?
What does she mean by knit cables all the way across the top?

Thanks for your help...

The free video on Knitting Help has a advanced techniques that discuss knitting cables

http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques

Basically a four stitch cable - move two stitches to a cable needle knit the next two then knit the two stitches off the cable needle.

if you have stitches 1, 2, 3, 4 your would move stitches 1 & 2 to a cable needle knit stitches 3 & 4 and then knit stitches 1 & 2 off the cable needle. After the cable the stitches would be in 3, 4, 1, 2 order.

The twist come from how you hold the two stitches that you move to the cable needle. If you let the cable needle hand in front of what you are knitting the cable twists one way, if the cable needle is in back then the cable twists in the other direction.

Cable needle in front and the cable twists right over left, in back and it twist left over right,

Two + two

The cable will be across a total of 4 stitches.

C8 would be 4 stitches on the cable needle, knit 4 then knit the 4 off the cable needle.
