Remember KP's superior customer service and free shipping! I was leery of spending that much money on something I wasn't so sure of, but those two things (including the sale) took away all doubt. I've seen where KP will replace a broken swift long after the 1-year warranty and stuff too. The gears seem to get a little worn (being that they are all wood) but I don't think too many of their competitors care enough to replace it when they go bad!
Thanks for the tips Kelly! KP won't ship to Canada for free, but they're still very reasonable, and I agree that their customer service is great ... I've never had any problems with them at all. Even if it eventually has to be replaced, $50 doesn't sound too bad for a swift when you compare it to a lot of the other ones on the market (which, like you said, won't come with KP's customer service!)
