How to turn work?
So I'm working on a sock, and the stitches are divided up as followed
needle 1: 10 STs
needle 2: 10 stitches
needle 3: 12 stitches

the pattern says work till 5 1/2 inches in ribbing (done that) then knit across 8 sts, turn work, then purl across 16 sts.

I'm a little confused...does this mean I knit 8 sts like normal, then skip over the 2 stitches left on needle 1, then start purling on needle 2?

I don't understand "turn" and where to start after I "turn"....

No you don't skip over the 2 sts on the L needle, turn the work as if you were at the end of the row and the 2 sts will now be on the R needle. Then purl over the 8 sts that you just knit, and I suspect 8 more sts from the next needle. You're going to be working over only part of the sts for a while.

I just saw a video, and it said to divide the stitches so that half the stitches are on one needle, and 1/4 of them are on the other two. Is this correct?

Right. That makes it easier to work on the 16 sts if they're on one needle.
