inc in the round

I have not knitted anything in years and just picking it up again. I am inc every fourth row on a sleeve and I do a KRL on first stitch, knit to marker and KLL on last stitch. I have knit them loose but it looks like a ridge all the way up the sleeve. Should I be knitting one stitch first then inc then knit to second last stitch then inc?

For this inc it's probably better to have at least one stitch between the incs. I inc at the end of the round, just before the marker, then inc right after the marker. Technically they're on a different round, but they come out being side by side instead of the end of round one being 'higher', so they look better.
