Trying to re-create a sweater from a picture

I found a sweater in a catalog that I KNOW I can knit, but can't figure out how to create the pattern.

It is a tunic-length, deep-V pullover with short sleeves (meant to be worn over a long-sleeve t-shirt.

I can figure out the ribbing at the bottom and on the sleeves (raglan), but the deep V neck has ribbing that runs perpendicular to the sweater (which is worked in simple stockinette).

This is probably a stupid question, but how does one create sideways ribbing? I'm wondering if somehow I would create the neckline separately and then sew it to the sweater?

The ribbing along the V is probably from sts picked up around the neck after you're done with the sweater and finished that way, not knit as you work the body. Most neckbands are done that way.

Yes, usually the neckline is shaped as you knit the body of the sweater and then the ribbed band is knit afterwards by picking up stitches.

You could try checking out a few free patterns that use a V-neck design in order to get an idea of how to do it when you go about creating your own pattern. A few you could check out are:
