This is just a guess, really, as I've not tried working with two strands yet, but maybe it can be joined in similarly to a single strand of yarn? That is, by holding the two ends together and pretending they were one strand (and using the same protocol you'd use for adding in single new ball of yarn). Not sure if this is correct, but if you're already using two balls to do a two stranded knit, then I'm not sure if there would be another way of doing it. It's what I would try if it were me, but perhaps one of the more experienced knitters knows better.
