I'm not a fan of the purl stitch either... It just feels awkward to do.
I don't mind ribbing as I seem to be able to get into a rhythm with it but doing purl flat for stst is a royal pain.
Hence my love of knitting in the round!

Knit or purl, I don't care... However, just creating an item with the purl stitch showing on the outside.. not for the reason of having a cabled texture or something but to showcase the purl stitch... yeah, I don't like that. I'm not a fan of the view of the "wrong side" of knitted work, really.

Speaking of... I saw this pattern on Knitty and while the hat isn't something I'll wear every day, I LOVE the stitch they use for it! I want to use the stitch on something else, actually...

Here's the stitch pattern:

Texture Pattern (Worked over an even number of sts):
Row 1 [RS]: K1, [k2tog] to last st, k1.
Row 2 [WS]: [K1, m1] to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 3 [RS]: K all sts.
Row 4 [WS]: K1, p to end. Note that changes of color are always made at the beginning of this row!
Repeat Rows 1-4 for Texture Pattern.
