Why does the border fold under
I just completed a prayer shawl with pockets for my mother. To avoid the rolling problem with stockinette, I added a garter stitch border at top, bottom and sides. The fabric doesn't roll, but the border folds over, why?

It may not have been wide enough to counteract the stockinette.

I've had that problem, too. Even with wider borders it can happen. I read recently that if you create points in the border..meaning it isn't just a straight edge along the stockinette it will take care of that. I haven't tried it though. Not sure what you can do about it now..

I've seen the same thing. Even with quite a wide border of garter it will want to fold. I'm not sure what to do on a shawl, but I've noticed that with a cardigan that the button bands seem to tame it.

I have also tried a seed stitch boarder to prevent curling, but that folds UP (instead of under). Only blocking seems to be the cure.
