Increasing in a pattern

How do you add increases into a 13+1 pattern and still maintain the pattern? The pattern I am working with is a pier glass pattern and as I add increases (making a sleeve), the original count of 66 stitches changes but I can't figure out how to add them and maintain the original pattern?

As you work the increases, you kind of expand the pattern on each side.

For example, if your pattern was

12345 12345 (increases here) 12345 12345

you would increase on one row and on the next row you'd work the stitches as follows

12345 123451 512345 12345
then
12345 1234512 4512345 12345 etc

make sense?

Sometimes you have to leave the increases in stockinette until you get enough for the pattern repeat.
