newbie knitter question

I'm doing leg warmers in a 1x1 rib. what's the best way to increase in a rib???? other than doing the increase on the end, it throws off my pattern. argh. I really don't want to increase on the end. any help??

When you're doing ribbing there really is no way to increase w/o it showing. It'll create a V sort of look at the point at which you increase because you're creating more ribs.

How much are you increasing in each row?

It will certainly show a little bit but could you not do the increases randomly across the rd?
Like:
increase 2, k1 p1 for rest of rd
k1, p1 for 6 sts, increase 2, k1 p1 for rest of rd
k1, p1 for 12 sts, increase 2, k1 p1 for rest of rd
etc

I'm not so much concerned that it will show (these are for me and will never leave my bedroom) as I am keeping in pattern with the k1 p1 rib. I'm thinking that what I might do, is do 2 increases back to back (knitting one, and purling one) and that will bring me back in pattern each time. Or! maybe k1 through the back loop then p1 thru the front loop. I think that would achieve the same thing. we'll see how it goes. thanks again for your advice!!!

Depending on the number of increases, they're less likely to show if you do them on the frontside purl sts. But you will have to remember that there is a change in the overall k1 p1 pattern.
