beginner question--striped blanket

Trying to make the Blue Lagoon baby blanket pattern on the Bernat website. It says to cast on with colors A and D. The first six rows are worked with colors A and C, then there seventh row is worked in color A and D.
What do I do with yarn D after the cast-on row? And should I cut it off after the seventh row?

You might be able to carry color D up to the 7th row, but it's probably on the wrong end of the blanket to use there, so you would have to cut it. After the 7th row, it depends when you use it again; if it's on row 10, you can leave it, if it's row 11 or 13, you'll have to cut it.

STRIPE PATTERN
Work 6 rows with 1 strand of A and 1 strand of C.
Work 1 row with 1 strand of A and 1 strand of D.
Work 2 rows with 1 strand of B and 1 strand of D.
Work 2 rows with 1 strand of B and 1 strand of C.

What would happen if you cast on with A and C, instead of D?

oh and it's all in garter stitch.

Doesn't matter about the stitch used, just the color sequence.
Okay, work rows 7, 8, 9 with D
After row 6 with C you'll need to cut that one because you need it at the beginning of row 10 which is on the other side from the end of row 6. If you start the color sequence over, then you can keep C going for row 12-17, and probably have to cut B. You'll get it figured out as you go along - if the yarn is dropped at the end of a row and will be needed at the beg of a row on the other edge then you have to cut it. If it's needed for a row on the same edge and only 2 or 4 up, then you don't need to cut.
