I don't think it's silly, nor do a lot of other people. You don't have to use it if you don't want to. We won't hold it against you.

When asking questions ALWAYS post the name and a link for the pattern if you have it.

I see it as... you can use the little button to thank someone or put it into words in a message, either on the forum or in an IM through the forum. I would think either way would be good.
