Neckband on jumper - knit up?
Hi,

I have a pattern here for a jumper and have almost completed it (yay!).

I have got stuck on the neckband.
The pattern states (for 2x2 rib) to knit up 28 sts evenly along left side of neck, knit across sts from front stitch holder, knit up 28 sts evenly along right side of neck and then knit across sts from back stitch holder.

I have joined the right shoulder seam with backstitch. I spoke to the pattern makers who said that the pattern was badly phrased (great - in a beginners book too!) and that knitted up really meant to use the existing cast off stitches from the front to create 28 new stitches, then continue the row with those stitches on the stitch holder and gain another 28 stitches on the other shoulder.

Is there any videos of how to start this? or how to pick up the stitches? Can anyone explain it in really simple terms?

Thanks

There's a great video on the tab for Free Videos at the top of this page. Go to Tips and look for Picking up Stitches.
When I need to pick up a number of sts, I mark off half the distance so that I can pick up one-half the sts in that portion (or 14 sts in each half of one side in your example). It just keeps me on track to pick up fairly evenly.
Congratulations on being almost finished!

Yeah, why they put knit up... it's normally called pick up and knit, which means you pick up on the cast-off and knit from those to continue the work.

A lot of people do call it 'knit up' saves the questions on whether to pick up a st and knit it again, pick up with one needle and knit with the other, or what.

Lol, I always thought pick up and knit was pretty straightforward on what to do... maybe that's just me?

You'd be surprised how confusing it is for some.
