Men's Thong Pattern

Hi Everyone!

I'm trying to knit a men's thong for a friend as a joke, but I've hit a snag. I've figured out how to do the wrap stitch and turn part of the pattern, but I cannot figure out what to do after that. Could someone please explain to me what I'm supposed to do from after "cont as est..."?? I've tried it several times, but I don't understand how you get from 20 to 60 stitches. Please help!!

The part of the pattern is:

*K to last 2 sts, wrap next st and turn.
P to last 2 sts, wrap next st and turn.
K to last 3 sts, wrap next st and turn.
P to last 3 sts, wrap next st and turn.
Cont as est until 3 sts are wrapped at each end of row and 1 st at each end remains unworked.
Work across 2 rows picking up wrapped sts at both sides of work and unworked sts.
Rep from * 16(18, 20) times while AT THE SAME TIME , M1 on each side of st marker every 4th row (counting rows up center of pouch) to 52[56, 60]sts.

On the next 2 rows you knit to the last 4 sts, W&T, then on the following 2 rows it would be to the last 5 sts. Then I think you'd have 3 wrapped sts on the ends of each row, and the 1 unworked one at the end of the rows. Turn and work 2 rows, you'll pick up the wrapped st and knit/purl it together with the one it's wrapped around. Repeat these rows and do an inc on each side of your stitch marker every 4th row until you have the correct number of stitches. The incs will get you to 60 sts.

That helps a lot. I guess what I'm not understanding is the:

"you'll pick up the wrapped st and knit/purl it together with the one it's wrapped around"

Does that mean you'll stick the needle through both loops together? I think that's the part that I'm finding the most confusing...

Yes you knit or purl the stitch and the wrap together. There's a wonderful video under the Free Videos tab at the top of this page, Advanced Techniques, Short Rows that shows you exactly how to do it.
