How to neaten buttonhole slit
Hello,

I have sewn grosgrain ribbon down inside fronts of knitted cardigan.
How do I neaten the slit I made in the ribbon behind the buttonholes for the button to go through? I have some fraying going on in the button slit. babette

Kudos to Rochester----from the one whose answer to all problems is Superglue. I can't believe I didn't think of this one. babette
My only thought is it will probably leave a dark stain on the pink grosgrain. That's ok, I'm over it.

Alternatively, you can slip stitch around the grosgrain, attaching it lightly to the knitting and stopping the fraying at the same time.

It seems like a good time to use a buttonhole stitch sewn around the buttonhole through both layers.

Yes, it is a hand sewn buttonhole stitch. I have used it a lot in my sewing and to neaten or reinforce a buttonhole in knitting. It is used for other things besides buttonholes, some only decorative, and if you make the stitches far apart it is used along the edges of blankets or clothes and called "blanket stitch".

Here is a video that shows one. I have not watched it as I have a dial up connection and tonight it is moving so slow it would take all night to bring in this 3 minute video. No joke. LINK

I did a Google search for "how to buttonhole stitch" and several things came up.

I wanted to mention that I have used the yarn I knit with if it is not too thick and a good thing to use would be embroidery floss in a matching color.

Merigold,

Thx again. I watched the video---what a neat stitch as you say for many things, buttonhole, blanket, etc or whatever. This in the one I am going to use. babette
