Well, that's a new one for me! Can you tell us the name of the pattern and give a link?

There's norwegian purl where you always have the yarn in back, see a video on the purls page. But it's possible that it makes a YO, just like some instructions would be to bring yarn to front then knit which wraps over the needle.

The pattern stitch to "p2tog-b" didn't make sense to me either so I asked KnitPicks about the "b" and they said: "The b is for you to purl two together through the back loops. It's a little awkward--you bring your right needle around and insert it from left to right through the back loops and then purl those stitches."

There's a video on the Glossary page that would show you how it's done.

Neat pattern stitch. I tried it out. It is definitely P2tog through the back loop.

I knit Continental too. A P2tog tbl is a bit tricky (not because we knit Continental, it just is) and what I almost always do is: keeping the yarn in front for a purl turn the piece of work so that the back side faces me, then insert the RHN into the 2nd stitch and on through the 1st st at the the tip of the needle right to left. Then turn the work back into the regular position, yarn around the RHN and purl the two tog from there.
