100 rows later... circular needle + pattern question

I have a pattern that I got from a knit1 magazine. It's a travel blanket and pillow, and after knitting over 100 rows (insert curse word here), I realise the blanket looks nothing like the photo.
If the pattern calls for circular needles, but doesn't specify that I should knit in the round, does that mean that I shouldn't have knit in the round?!

Yep. Blankets are knit flat and only use circs to hold the large amount of stitches. Only knit in the round if the pattern says to 'join' right after the cast on instructions.
