Hello,
I have a question regarding this pattern:

In particular, I am on the sportweight section for the earflaps. The last sentence says continue in this manner until 5 sts remain. My question is how to continue? I guess I'm not sure what rows to knit and how to continue until I get down to 5 sts. Thanks so much!!

On the previous rows you've been knitting almost half the sts then ssk k1, k2tog and knit the rest of the sts on a dec row, and on the other row, knit half p1 (that's the back of that k1 on the other side) and knit the rest. You might want to mark that center k1/p1 st with a paperclip or safety pin so you know which one it is.

You've picked up 21 st from the front CO to the back CO. The center st is always in stockinette, the flanking sts in garter.
The instructions are to k8, decrease, k1 (the center stockinette st), decrease, k8. The back side row is all knit except for the center st which is purl in order to keep it in stockinette. The next front side row is k7, decrease, k1, decrease, k7. The back side row repeats as above. And that's the repeat and on each following front side row, knit one less st before the decrease and then one less st after the second decrease (k6, two rows later k5, two rows later k4 etc.) until there are 5 sts remaining (2sts on either side of the center st). Basically all the rows and all the sts are knit except the center st which is purled on the back side rows.

You want to keep working in the same way you have been. If we call their "next row", "next row", etc. rows 1, 2, 3, 4.
Row 5 will be:
K6[one less than the beginning of row 3] (6,7,7,8,9,9) sts, SSK, k1, k2tog, k6(6,7,7,8,9,9). [You will now have 15 (15,17,17,19,21,21) sts depending on the size you are making]
Row 6: K7 (7,8,8,9,10,10)[1 more than at the beginning of row 5, this will be up to the middle st], p1 [the middle st], knit 7 (7,8,8,9,10,10)to the end.

By this time you should be able to see what is happening. On the right side you want a line of knit stitches going right down the center of the flap and you will decrease right before (SSK) and right after (k2tog) that line of knit stitches on every right side row. You will lose 2 stitches with each decrease row.

On the wrong side rows you will always knit to the center stitch, purl the center stitch, and then knit to the end.

Keep working that way until you have only 5 stitches.
