Cast on 9 (11-11) sts (sides). Knit these sts. p1 turn. cast on 9 (11-11) sts. 26 (32-32) sts.

I'm going to take a chance and assume that you already have stitches on the needle?

If that's the case, cast on 9 stitches, knit across the existing stitches, purling the last one. Then you'll cast on 9 more. I'm not sure why they say to turn at that point, but I suspect it's just so you can cast on the stitches.

I'd suggest working across the existing stitches, purling the last one, and working a knitted cast on for the next side stitches.,

Does this make sense?

Yeah, but if she casts on 9, and then 9 more, that's 18, and looks like she should have 26. None of the stst counts add up.

I'm working on the premise that she already has stitches on the needle and the cast-on stitches are added to them.

Sassy, I think we need some more information or a link to your pattern. It sounds like you have 8 sts on the needle (for the smallest size) and you should follow Ingrid's directions above. But I'm curious about the p1. Does the next row have a purl st to balance the purl that seems to divide the bottom of the slipper from the side?
