Need help - desperate!!!!!
Please could someone help. I'm new-ish to knitting and I am attempting my first ever baby cardigan. I've done the back, it looks perfect comparing to the pattern, measurements, tension etc all ok.

So now I'm on the left front and NOTHING adds up. I'm going to post the instructions in the hope someone can see something I am obviously missing!

Soooo apologies for how long this will be but I really am stuck!

Using 4mm needles cast on 48 sts.
1st Row (RS) Knit
2nd Rw (WS) *K1 P1 to end of row. Patt is now set.
**Cont in patt as set until work measures 4cm ending with a WS row.
Shape Front
Keeping to patt as set, dec 1 st at front neck edge on this and every foll knit row until work measures 14cm ending with a RS row.
This is where I'm going wrong!!!
Shape Armhole
Cast off 7 sts at beg of the row Patt to end. (41 sts). Keeping to patt whilst shaping, cont to shape front edge and at the same time dec 1 st at the armhole edge of work on the next and every foll knit row until 2st remain on the needle. Work measures 22cm.

Right, now the problem I'm having is the decreasing on the shape front. It definietely says to dec 1 ST on this and every foll knit row, not every other row. So I start off with 48 stitches but I'm expected to decrease a stitch on every odd number row until it measures 14 cm, but somehow also cast off 7 stitches once I've reached this measurement AND still have 41 stitches?!?!

I just really do not get it. I've tried writing out each line marking what would be done, I've tried just knitting it and seeing where I get. I give up! This just does not work!

Please can someone spot what I am doing/reading wrong?!?!

Thank you!!!
Frustrated Froggy!!!!

Maybe I'm missing something, but WHERE does it tell you that you're supposed to end up with 41 sts??? I don't see that anywhere in your post!

Thanks,

I think the 41 sts could be a typo. There's only 10 cm of decreasing before the BO so that's not too many rows. What's the pattern and is there a link for it?

Obviously there is a mistake in the pattern.

I'd follow the directions as written and ignore the stitch count.

Are you sure you are supposed to start the shaping prior to the 14cm point?
Look at picture on pattern, does it look like there is 14cm of 48 sts wide fabric, followed by the armhole and front shaping. If so, then work all 48sts in pattern for 14cm, then BO 7sts and start front edge shaping. Con't till 2sts remian.

That's what I thought at first. Begin the front neck shaping on the same row as the BO stitches.

I'm afraid it was pattern I mail ordered so I cannot post a link. It's a kimono style wrap cardigan.

Originally when I first tried, it fit when I held it against the back piece, but when I saw I was meant to have 48 stitches I counted and only had something like 21!!!

I'm so new to knitting but it definitley needed to taper to create teh wrap style, so 48 stitches would really be way too many.

Do you all think I should continue as pattern till 14cm, BO and carry on till 2 st remain then?

Thanks in advance for all the replies!!!!

Yes, I think as long as the front matches the back at the seam or armhole side and you get to 2 sts with the length to the shoulder matching the back length you should be fine. You're right to match the front up to the back and look at the picture to make sure you're on track.

I just wondered if there's a picture, that can help too. So do the decs, then at 14 cm BO the sts. Did you also BO 7 on the back?
