stitch marker
I am following a pattern using circular needles and it says to use stitch markers in 4 corners. What are they?

It may mean at 4 evenly spaced stitches in your project. Usually it's to help you keep track of where you are in the pattern sts or where shaping is going to happen later.
What is the piece you're knitting? and can you quote a few relevant lines (not the whole pattern) before the direction to place the stitch markers.

Stitch markers are rings or loops of other yarn you put on the needles to mark places between stitches. It sounds like this pattern spaces them evenly around in 4 places so you can increase to make the corners.
