polly colourscape - shoulder and back neck
this is the first ever sweater i am knitting, so i'm a bit confused...
48 sts - RS facing
cast off 4, K until 8 sts, turn and leave remaining on holder, work each side separately
WS - cast off 3, P to end. cast off 5 remaining sts
RS facing - rejoin yarn to rem sts. cast off centre 24, K to end
complete to match 1st side
MY NEMESIS!
1. do i K the 8 sts after putting the rest on holder or take out the needle and put for WS? i can't just turn and be on P row - sts on right needle.
2. if i rejoin yarn RS facing, i'd be casting off sts at the finished off side instead on the other end...? would have to rejoin on P row and cast off
3. seems like more than 24 sts need to be cast off..if i don't know what to do in 1 and 2, i can't even start the other side.
4. reversing means from WS facing - cast off 3, P to end, cast off 5?
please help!

The pattern is telling you to cast off 4, knit 8 and leave the sts remaining on the left needle on that needle and ignore for now (or put those remaining sts on a holder). Now turn to the purl side, cast off 3 sts and purl the next sts (5 sts). Turn and cast off 5 sts.
Now you’re going to work the ignored sts that were left on the left hand needle or on a st holder. Start with a new end of yarn and bind off the next 24 sts (this sounds like the center neck) and knit to the end (should be 12 sts). Then turn and cast off 4 st (to match the very first cast off), purl to the end, turn cast off 3 sts, knit to the end, turn, cast off 5 sts.
You basically have 12 sts on each side of a center 24 for a total of 48.

thanks! i tried, but still doesn't match the P-K sequence.
when i cast off 4 and the knit till 8 sts are on my left needle, put the centre sts on holder. this leaves me with 8 sts on left needle. should i K those? if i just turn, i have 8 sts on right needle. how should i cast off and P those?

Just leave those 8 sts, you'll get back to them later for the other shoulder when you've done the first one.

".when i cast off 4 and the knit till 8 sts are on my left needle, ..."
Don't knit until there are 8 sts left on the left hand needle. The directions are to Cast off 4 sts and then knit 8 sts (I know it says "knit until 8" but I think that means "knit until you have knit 8 sts" not "knit until 8 sts remain on the left needle". That way the pattern knit and purl rows, total sts, and symmetry for the shoulders add up.
So Cast off 4, knit 8 and turn, ignoring the 36 sts which should be on the left hand needle. You'll get to them later. Then follow the cast off directions for the shoulder, then the cast off (24sts) for the center, then the second shoulder.

I love A-ha! moments!
You're right "knit until 8 sts" is very ambiguous.
