Pattern conversion...
Hello-

I want to make a tank top (has a cute ruffle at the neckline) in the round. If I were knitting it flat, for the back I would CO 80 sts. 160 sts seems like too many to CO to knit in the round. Most of my friends guess at that number when trying to convert a pattern from flat to round. Is there a general "rule" on how to come up with the correct number to CO? I'm tired of trial and error knitting when it comes to this kind of conversion. Thank you and stay in stitches. Kay

No that's absolutely right you double the sts or add the sts for the front and back together, which are usually the same for each piece anyway. If you divide your sts per inch into the 160 that should come out to the measurement for your size - 40" say at 4 sts per inch.

Ok, so if I'm understanding you correctly, the pattern gauge is 18 and if I divide 4.5 into 160 I get (roughly) 35" and that is what I want. It still seems like 160 sts would be too much though. I'll give a try....

Thank you!

160 is the same as 80 front and 80 back, you're just knitting them all at once instead of separately.
