(pu and knit 1 st, yo) 47 times ?????

I know how to pick up stitches and I know how to knit them after they have all been picked up but this .... I'm picking up with the right needle ... how can I knit one with nothing on my left needle? (pu and knit 1 st, yo) 47 times I'm confused. What am I not getting?

Pick up and knit can really be done as one step. Pretend the edge you're picking up in is the L needle. Insert the R needle into the edge st (pick up) then wrap the yarn around it and pull it through (knit). Then yarnover and go on to the next one.
