Help reading patt

My pattern says: Increase at both ends of the 1st and next fourth rows. does this mean increase on the first and fifth row, ninth row etc or does it mean increase on the first and fourth row? and so on.

You were right with the next row and then the fifth row (and the ninth etc.) for however many times the pattern says to continue the increases at both ends.
