I’m a beginner at crocheting and needed a simple diaper cover pattern. I started searching on the web for a simple pattern that I could understand and achieved. The elusive pattern was nowhere to be found. The ones that I found were too complicated and the instructions were too many. One pattern I tried, it just did not want to come out right. In the end I decided to create my own pattern with the crocheting knowledge I had acquired. This is the end result. I hope you will find it useful and the end result satisfying.
I worked this pattern in a continuous round. The pattern instructions will be for a continuous round. The pattern can be worked in a continuous rounds or individual rounds. If working in individual rounds SL ST to join and CH 3 to begin new round. Every chain 3 will count as 1st DC.
Form elastic into loop sewing the ends overlapping ends by ½ inch.
Round 1: Holding elastic loop tie yarn to it making a small knot. SC over the elastic covering elastic with yarn (approx. 115 SC) all around. SL ST to join, CH 3 (counts as first DC)
Round 2 – 6: DC in 4th chain from hook. Mark this chain with a piece of contrasting yarn to mark beginning of round, DC in each ST around. Do no join and work in continuous rounds. Every time you reach the yarn marker you will have made 1 round.
Once you have reached end of round 6 SK 1 ST and SL ST in next to level off. CH 2 (every CH 2 will count as 1st HDC)
From this point on you will be working rows.
Row 7: HDC in 3rd CH from hook. HDC in next 26 ST, CH 2 turn. (28 HDC)
Row 8: SK 2 ST, HDC on next ST, HDC until last 2 ST. SK 1 ST, HDC on last ST, CH 2 turn. (25 HDC)
Row 9 – 13: repeat row 8. Decreasing by 3 ST in each row.
Row 9 – 22 HDC
Row 10 – 19 HDC
Row 11 – 16 HDC
Row 12 – 13 HDC
Row 13 – 10 HDC
Row 14 – 16: HDC in ea. ST. at end of each row CH 2, turn. Every CH 2 counts as 1 HDC) 10 HDC in each row.
here are some pics of the diaper cover:
From this point on you will be increasing in each row by 3 ST.
Row 17: 2 HDC in 3rd CH from hook. HDC in next 5 ST. 2 HDC in next 2 ST, HDC in last ST. CH 2, turn. (13 HDC)
Row 18: 2 HDC in 3rd CH from hook. HDC in next 7 ST. 2 HDC in next 2 ST, HDC in last ST. CH 2, turn. (16 HDC)
Row 19: 2 HDC in 3rd CH from hook. HDC in next 10 ST. 2 HDC in next 2 ST, HDC in last ST. CH 2, turn. (19 HDC)
Row 20: 2 HDC in 3rd CH from hook. HDC in next 14 ST. 2 HDC in next 2 ST, HDC in last ST. CH 2, turn. (22 HDC)
Row 21: 2 HDC in 3rd CH from hook. HDC in next 17 ST. 2 HDC in next 2 ST, HDC in last ST. CH 2, turn. (25 HDC)
Row 22: 2 HDC in 3rd CH from hook. HDC in next 20 ST. 2 HDC in next 2 ST, HDC in last ST. (28 HDC). SL ST and finish off. Sew in tail.
Fold up and whip stitch with back of rounds, eyeballing it to make it look even. Sew in tails and finish off. Turn inside out and you’re done.
For bigger sizes just make a larger loop and play with the amount of stitches needed to achieve the end result and make it your own. This is a very forgiving pattern.
