IMO, it really depends how cold, how windy and whether rain is a factor. Wool is required for mountaineer's clothing because it feeds your body warmth back to you. (Even when wet a wool sweater can provide warmth.) If a mountaineer isn't wearing wool, he can't go with the team. That's what my brother-in-law told me. He's climbed many peaks, and is part of our State's search-and-rescue teams.

The wool sweater with a rain jacket, as you mentioned, sounds perfect for most conditions. A nice aran weight sweater, maybe even a bit thicker like Manos del Uruguay yarn.

It does look nice, and in Washington, you need the warmth.

Just curious, and you can tell me if I'm nosy, how many sweaters have you knitted for yourself? I'd love to have that much skill!
