help in pattern reading...

i just started knitting a hat off a pattern i found on the red heard website. i've gotten the first 10 rows so far and things are going good...but the next line of the pattern is confusing and i'm not sure how i increase to the required stitches. this is the line i'm stuck on:

"Round 11: * K1, p1, (k1, p1) in next st; repeat from *
around – 72 sts."

the initial cast on was 54. i haven't been able to find any youtube videos for help on this. any insightful help for a "newbie" knitter would be greatly appreciated!!

The (k1, p1) in next stitch is your increase.
On this stitch knit it as usual, BUT DO NOT take the old stitch off the left hand needle. Instead leave it there, and after you make the knit stitch make a purl stitch through the same loop. THEN tak ethe loop off of your left hand needle. You have now made two stitches out of one.

The entire row between the ** gets repeated so
K1, P1, (k1, p1) in next stitch, K1, P1, (k1, p1) in next stitch...to the end of the row. This should get you to 72 sts.

The '(k1, p1) in next stitch' is an increase that keeps the rib pattern. Knit into the st, keep it on the L needle, then bring your yarn to the front and purl into it again.
