Pattern Puzzle
Hi all,

I have a bit of an unusual request for help

Would any of you know of a pattern generator that will do the opposite i.e. allow you to input a knitting pattern and then give you a picture of how it would/should look when finished?

I am trying to solve a Geocache puzzle and the co-ordinates are hidden in a knitting patern. So once you knit the pattern, you should be able to read them.

I have not the first clue when it comes to knitting and neither does my wife so I was hoping that you pro's might be able to help

Any suggestions would be really appreciated

Jamie (The Irish Knit-Wit).

I don't know of a generator, but if you have a link to the pattern, someone here might be able to figure it out if they have time to make a chart.

You could google 'knitting chart generator' and see if that gets you anywhere. It wouldn't give you an image of the finished product, but you usually can tell what you're looking at from a chart.

Very clever disguise!

Below are two chart generators:

http://jacquie.typepad.com/Charts/knitChart.htm

http://www.innaz.com/cgi-bin/makechart/makechart.cgi

Be sure and look at examples/directions, so you know how to input the information correctly.

And by the way, you could probably skip the first and last three rows in the generator since they're just foundation rows for setting up the real pattern.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Does this make sense?

I tried to scan the chart I scratched out for fun but it didn't do well.

It looks like this:

(shamrock) NS 3 20.651
W 00 (not sure) 6 14.340

The symbol after W could be a symbol more like -(: (use your imagination.) I can't get that to stop coming up a smiley (grrr) but it's a mirror image.

If you want, I can try to chart that section again, darker, and try to scan it.

Thanks so much Ingrid...I think you just may have cracked it!

I think the symbol after the 00 is (or at least should be) the #6.

There's definitely a symbol or numbers after the W and before the 6.

Let me see if I can work it out more clearly.

You can't read the chart or can't read the text? Or you're trying to make a chart?
It would help if you break it down into separate lines, and btw, please remove most of the pattern; it's a copyright violation to repost another pattern, even if it's free. The sts in the () are to be repeated as many times as it says after it - (2k, 4p) x3 would be k2, p4, k2, p4, k2, p4.

So it starts out like this -
Cast on 27 stitches.
Row 1 Knit to end
Row 2 Purl to end
Row 3 Knit to end
Row 4 20p, 2k, 5p
Row 5 2k, p, k, 3p, k to end
Row 6 8k, 10p, (2k, 2p)x2, p
Row 7 27k
Row 8 2k, 4p, 8k, 6p, 2k, 5p
Row 9 10k, 2p, 6k, 2p, 2k, 3p, 2k
Row 10 (2k, 4p)x3, 9p
Row 11 20k, p, 2k, p, 3k
Row 12 (2k, 4p)x2, 3k, p to end
Row 13 Knit to end
Row 14 12p, 14k, p
Row 15 15k, 3p, 9k
Row 16 23p, 4k
Row 17 8k, 2p, 3k, 2p, k to end
Row 18 6k, 5p, 2k, 4p, 7k, 3p
Row 19 Knit to end and so on.
