Pocket help needed

Hey all, I'm fairly new to knitting, self taught over the last six months! I have completed my first project, a gorgeously warm cardigan! The pattern states to knit two pockets and then sew them into place. I would like to know which stitch and method to use please. I have looked for instructional videos on the Internet but have drawn a blank! Any help would be gratefully received! Many thanks

This sounds like a pocket which will be set into the seam of the sweater rather than knitted into the fronts? You could knit two curved pocket shapes in stockinette st (knit one row, purl one row), seam them, knit sides facing, with the cast on edges open. Then seam the cast on edges on either side of the side seam. If you'd like less bulk, you could stockinette st one half a pocket and make the other half out of fabric.

Thanks for that! I have actually finished the cardigan and the pockets are knitted separately to be sewn on the fronts. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I'm not very good at sewing (hence I've taken up knitting!!) so I'm not sure how to sew the pockets in place. Thanks for your help.

OK, then I think you can knit the pockets in any stitch that will complement the pattern of the sweater. Take a look at some patterns (search cardigans with outside pockets on Pattern Central, Google, Ravelry or on yarn manufacturers' websites). See if there's some style or shape that appeals. You can always attach the pocket with a whip stitch, a kind of overhand sewing stitch.
