You can probably knit it with just about any yarn, you'd just use to use a needle the right size. For chunky yarn you'd need a pretty large needle, and for thin yarn you'd use a needle about 3 or 4 sizes larger than it says on the label. But yes, thin yarn is tricky to get used to; I can use a sock yarn pretty well, but laceweight is still difficult even though I've been knitting for a long time. It just takes a little practice.
