baby shower for 2nd baby??
I have been invited to a baby shower for a mother in my son's playgroup. Her daughter is under 2 and the new baby is also a girl. Personally, I think the purpose of a baby shower is to celebrate a new mother and help her get ready for a baby. It seems inappropriate to me to have another shower less than 2yrs later. Am I wrong?

I don't think you're wrong. IMHO a party to celebrate the upcoming child is a good idea, but not necessarily a shower. I think offering to prepare a meal, take the older daughter for a play date, something like that would be an entirely appropriate gift.

Well, it's a common practice. She may not need the same types of things, but a small gift to celebrate the baby isn't out of line. It's nice to have a few new things for a new baby. Something with the baby's name on it maybe?

I agree with Jan--it's not out of line and is a common practice these days--especially in our throw-away, low-quality product society.
If you don't want to make her something, find out where she's registered and see if you can get her something that she might not have kept from the previous baby (newborn diapers maybe). At least that's my two cent's worth!!

I've gone to baby showers for 2nd and 3rd babies and it's not new, that was 20 or 30 years ago. It's not wrong, it's usually friends who throw the shower, they may not have been around for the first one. New babies can always use stuff that may not have been saved from the first one - like diapers!
