I-cord on seed stitch

I'm finishing up Roam ( I have to do the I-cord. I think I get it (thanks to - but after a few rows I get weird bumpy bits. I think maybe it's picking up the purls of the seed stitch - either that or I'm doing it wrong

I have ripped it out a few times already and I don't want to ruin the rest of the hoodie - is there a trick to picking up seed stitches? The pattern says 'working 3 rows of I-Cord for every 4 rows of front edge' which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me so maybe that's where I'm going wrong.

Any ideas?!

If you matched the rows of I-cord one for one with the rows on the front of the hoodie, the I-cord would stretch out the front. So to prevent that you should knit 2 rows of I-cord picking up in rows 1 and 2 of the front, then knit row 3 of the I-cord and pick up in row 4 of the front. Skipping a row on the fronts won't show and will prevent the stretched out front edge.

You could also try picking up 3 out of 4 stitches all the way around as a base. Purl back and then work the icord on your stockinette. Or if you didn't want to add a row, you could cut your yarn after the stitch pick up and restart at the beginning of the picked up row with the applied icord.

It may not be what the pattern calls for, but it makes for a nice edge. Just an idea.
