Casting off in the round??
I must be doing something wrong ...because when I finished my first cowl (Yay!) I cast off just like when knitting flat and there is a space between my first cast off stitch and my last one. If that makes sense...what did I do wrong?

That's normal. You're really knitting in a spiral so the end of a round is a 'row' higher than the beginning. What I do is 'knit' a stitch into the center of the first bound off st (not the edge) and pull the last loop from the BO over it. This evens out the edge and closes the gap.

You didn't do anything wrong but here are a couple more techniques for jogless bind off.
