Joining knit squares using an I-cord???

I am knitting a blanket for our first grandson (6 Granddaughters), comprised of squares. I have an idea that I would like to join all of the squares with an I-cord edging. Does anyone have any idea how/if this might work? Or am I going to need to find a different plan?

You could seam the squares and apply an I-cord edging all around the outside perimeter of the blanket (applied I-cord)

Thanks Salmonmac, I am begining to think that might be what I need to do. I think I need to make the squares a bit bigger too.
