Help with Stahman's Shawls and Scarves pattern
I've been pouring over these two rows for hours now. Started last night and thought if I left it over night the one stitch would magically appear... which sometimes happens when I walk away from my knitting :P

So, over night and two hours later, I am one stitch off and I'll be damned if I can figure out how. All the increases and decreases cancel each other out in row 11b (40 sts) in row 13b I am one stitch short needing 41 sts. I can't link the pattern as it's from a book. Stahman's Shawls and Scarves Lace Faroese-Shaped Shawls From The Neck Down. I am working the Josephine shawl.

Chart D
Row 11b - K4, yo, ssk, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog, yo 4x, k5, yo, ssk, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog, yo 4x end k1 (40 sts)
Row 12 purl
Row 13b - K3, yo, ssk 3x, k, ssk, yo, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk 3x, k, ssk, yo, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, end k1.

Which needs 41 sts *sob* I don't see an increase without a decrease in the previous row, but I am one stitch short. Does anyone have the book or can tell from the pattern (I've read it twice I think I've got it spelled out right from the chart) where I am missing that one stitch?

I did google the eratta for this book and found one for a scarf.

I actually can't see where it affects the pattern at all if I leave it out. I'm going to do just that and continue with second part of of chart C and see what happens.

Thank you

You probably forgot a yo on row 11, or did an extra decrease. Go back to that row and name your sts - 4 knits, over, dec, over, dec, 3 knits, decs, and so on. You'll find it, then just mark the spot and fix it when you do row 13.

Actually I get the same numbers from the rows you've quoted that you get if I put in the parentheses like this:
Row 11b - K4, yo, ssk, yo, ssk, k3, (k2tog, yo) 4x, k5, yo, ssk, yo, ssk, k3, (k2tog, yo) 4x end k1 (40 sts)
Row 12 purl
Row 13b - K3, (yo, ssk) 3x, k, ssk, yo, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3, (yo, ssk) 3x, k, ssk, yo, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, end k1.

which is, I assume what you're doing too. It may be easier for you to spot extra stitch (missing in 11b or extra in 13b) by looking at the chart because you may be able to see the symmetry of the pattern that way.

Yeah, I've gone over it and over it and over it searching for a forgotten or dropped yarn over but can't find one. The rows before and the rows after. Section D is always 40 sts. But row 13 would decrease it by one stitch to 39. I think the last decrease in that row is an error. I think it's end knit 2 AND the last decrease doesn't seem to fit the pattern. I dunno. I've worked it and purled the next row and it looks just fine. Think I'm gonna see if I can contact the publisher or something. Can't seem to find a site for the author, but I'll keep looking.

Thank you for the replies. I'm really, really loving this pattern. These shawls have such a gorgeous drape.

There's this link about editions of the book and errata from the auther, which you may already have seen. You might try contacting her (Myrna A.I. Stahman) diretly through Ravelry perhaps, for advice.

Thanks, hadn't thought to contact her on Raverly! I've moved on (finally) to the repeat portion of the shawl (35 rows :P) and it's progressing quickly and without a hitch now. I will find a way to contact her and find out what the hiccup was. Such gorgeous pieces of work. All of them are.
