After the knit stitch, bring the yarn to the front and over the right needle to the back (the yo) and then bring the yarn around the needle to the front again for the purl stitch.

Knit 1, then make the yo as if the next st was a knit (wrap around the needle), and bring the yarn to the front to purl. It's like when you switch from knit to purl in ribbing except there's a yo in between the stitches.
