Have you tried looking at ravelry.com? They have tons of patterns. Teenagers vary so much in taste, it's hard to guess what the one you have in mind would like.
Honestly I think very few of the scarf patterns are "childish". Most children don't wear scarves because of the danger of dangling ends.
It would help if you could be more specific. Are you thinking lace? Do you want something with bulky yarn so it knits up fast? Do you have a yarn in mind?
