My poor poor cables

I'm stitching a cabled beret in the round. Some where I messed up but I havent a clue how. My cables look like they keep getting cut off by my purl stitches? (If that makes sense) Basically where there should be v's I'm seeing bumps!

Any ideas why this is happening and how to avoid it in the future.

Maybe you picked it up and started working inside out, with the needle tips on the far side of the hat instead of closer to you.

Are you accidentally holding the purl stitches in the front?

For instance:

If you had to cross 2 knit stitches over 2 purl stitches. You may have slipped the first two stitches onto a cable needle and held them in front of your work instead of the back of your work?

Did any of that make sense?
