I had some yarn leftover from my GS's latest sweater, not enough for much of anything it seemed, so I started a pair of toe up socks which could be short top socks or have contrasting cuffs, then I changed my mind and decided I would make a pair of mittens instead (the toes become the fingers part of the mittens) and I did an afterthought thumb for the first time. When I went to bind off the ribbing at the top, I tried Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off and, (surprisingly) found it too stretchy. I tried working the extra yarn over part on the purl stitches only of my 1x1 ribbing and did the knit stitches as usuall; it worked out great! I had tried it with the yarn over on the knit stitches but wasn't as happy with how it looked. Has anyone else done this? I'm thinking it would work just as well with a 2x2 rib but haven't given it a go yet.

I learned that I can work mittens from the fingers up, the afterthought thumb is easy, and this great bind off is adaptable. My GS also has matching mittens to with his new sweater. Ain't knittin' great????!!!!!
