Alternate

My pattern says dec 2 stitches at begining of 1st row and every alternate row. Does Alternate mean every 2nd row ie only on knit row or every next row. ie 1st row plain 2nd row pearl.

Alternate row means every other row. So if row 1 is a dec row, every odd row will be a dec row and in your case that's every knit row..

and when they say 'at the beginning', you don't have to and should not do it in the very 1st stitch. I used to do that until I learned that makes it soooooo much harder to sew up the garment later.

i always work the 1st stitch and then the decrease.
