How much yarn?

Hello, I was wondering, if I'm knitting without a pattern, how would I work out how much I will need for a project? And if I only have a one or two balls, how would I work out if it will be enough for what I want to do?

Look at a similar pattern that uses a similar yarn and needle. After a while, you'll be able to estimate how much something takes.

I always buy at least 1 or 2 extra skeins just in case. I use the left overs for some other project, often striped hats, but anything could work.
