Knit cuff/bracelet: why is it that sometimes, the top part ends up tighter than the bottom part, thus not fitting around my wrist? (see Youtube video)

Alright. I'll start by watching the video about purling here on the website. I think I see what I might have done wrong. Didn't realize there were so many videos on here, somehow I only thought there was one! Silly me.

If that still doesn't work out, I'll look up different bind off techniques... didn't think there were more than two either. I guess I'll be laughing at this whole situation later on.

The Glossary page has knitting terms and many of them have videos which aren't covered in the knit, purl, increase and decrease pages. If you go to the Tips page, there's several handy ones as well, and also on the Advanced Techniques. I think there's about 150 videos on this site.

Dear helpful Knitting help members. I hope my recurring questions / issues aren't getting too annoying for you. If I could help one of you, I would, but I'm a total beginner at this...

It seems I'm having yet another issue. This time, I figured out what I was doing wrong with the purling and once I got that right, I succeeded in binding off a purl knit row in the end. But it seesm it's just as tight as when I simply bind off, and as when I bind off with bigger needles. It seems like nothing is working and I'm feeling pretty discouraged, but I'm not giving up. It just seems like my bind offs are cursed.

I mean, shouldn't this be really simple...?

If you're going to post a video... it would be a lot more helpful to have less talk, less flipping the piece around from side to side and SHOW us how you're actually doing knitting or binding off. Seeing the end result doesn't tell us what you're doing wrong, we need to see how you're forming the stitches, how you wrap the yarn around... just as if we were sitting next to you watching you.

You may be pulling the yarn snug every time you form a stitch or lift a stitch over the other to bind off. Don't... don't even tension the yarn at all. Without watching how your make the sts, and manuever the yarn, that's all I can suggest right now.

You're right about the video thing... I kinda started realizing it toward the end. I'll keep that in mind from now on. It's just difficult since I can't knit and hold the camera at the same time. Maybe I'll pile up some books or have my boyfriend hold the camera next time. Regardless, as much as you may be right about the no tension when knitting thing, I forgot to mention this but I did try it before. The knitting ended up clumsy and loose though... like a web instead of an actual full, hole-less piece. I did just get a new pair of extremely thin needles though, so I'll try it with those... hopefully it'll be a little tighter even if I knit loosely.

All right, that's good that you've seen the other end of the spectrum: what really loose knitting or bind off looks like. Now try working from "no tension" to a slight amount of tension and see if you can get to the point of a knitted fabric and bind off that you like, not too holey and not super tight.

Actually, the last time I tried loose knitting, I stopped about 1/3 way because I didn't like what I saw beginning to form on the needle. But this morning, I tried completing an actual cuff using that full loose method one more time, and I'm actually very happy with the results! The cuff turned out surprisingly well put together as opposed to the scary looking looseness that had previously been forming itself on my sowing needle's sides. The bind off is absolutely perfect, too. Just as flexible as the cast on. The problem is finaly solved. Thank you so much!!!
