Messy Seed Stitch - Help!

I am going to start work on a scarf shortly and thought I'd do it in seed stitch. (I mostly do garter stitch or stockinette stitch.) But I am clearly having problems with the steps.

I start off by casting on and then doing a row of knit stitches, followed by a row of knit one, purl one. Then on the second row of the pattern, purl one, knit one. I do slip the first stitch of the row and purl the last so I get that nice braided edge, but maybe I shouldn't? Is that not compatible with the seed stitch?

I have to be doing something wrong though - it's a hideous mess. It doesn't look anything like what I see online.

I have attached a picture (sorry for orientation). I know it's not much of a sample, but I am too frustrated and confused to do much more!

Your help is much appreciated!

Here are some instructions for attaching a photo that should help.
You can certainly slip the first stitch and purl the last. How many sts are you casting on? If it's an odd number then row 1 is sl 1, (k1, p1) to the end. Row 2 is the same.
The best way to check that things are going correctly is to look at your sts and when you see a knit stitch on the left needle, purl it; when you see a purl stitch on the left needle, knit it.
