Grace Gown by Katherine Vaughan Neck Shape help!

I am stuck on the shaping of the neck on this gown...Here is what the pattern reads:

Next Rw: K8, and sl st to a stitch holder for neck; k8, knit 8 and slip to a stitch holder for neck, k8- 8 sts each side.
Next Rw: P5, p2tog, pl across first side and slip to a st holder for shoulder; p1, p2tog, p5 across second side and slip to a st holder for sholder-7 sts each side.

The parts that are bold are confusing me. I thought I got it but then I start the underlined part...Am I suppose to p5 from the stitch holder and put it back on the stitch holder? And when I'm done with the back does it all go on the stitch holder? And the part that is just bolded, is that back slit suppose to stay separate or join it at this point????

I think the pattern makes sense as:

Next Rw: k8, knit 8 and slip to a stitch holder for neck, k8- 8 sts each side.
Next Rw: P5, p2tog, pl across first side and slip to a st holder for shoulder; p1, p2tog, p5 across second side and slip to a st holder for sholder-7 sts each side.
Is that correct?

This is the beginning of the neck and shoulder shaping. You'll have 8sts for each shoulder, separated by 8sts which are on a stitch holder. Leave those center sts on the holder. There'll be directions later to tell you how to work with them. What you can do after the first row is turn as you normally would at the end of the row and p5, p2tog, p1 and then put those sts on another holder. You can cut the yarn leaving a 6 inch tail and use the end of the yarn attached to the ball to work the second side, p1, p2tog, p5 and then slip this shoulder also to a third stitch holder. So you'll end with 3 stitch holders with 7sts--8sts--7sts.

Here is a link to see a picture of the gown. It was in the "Your Knitting Life" magainze, February/ March issue.

That makes a lot more sense! I'll try it that way. The way the pattern reads in the magazine makes it sounds like the areas of where the shoulders are (the edges I guess you could say) are suppose to be on the stitch holders.

Ah, very pretty! Yes, the shoulders don't go onto stitch holders until after the p2tog decrease row. You can cut the yarn after the first shoulder leaving a 6 inch tail, depending on what the next directions for the shoulders are. (Possibly a 3-needle bind off? In that case you can still cut the yarn but leave about 12-15" in case you need it.)
