Knitting With Snowflake, Do I need to change the pattern?

I really need a hat for winter and I'm desperate to knit one with my Sirdar Snowflake yarn (it's black and sparkly and oooooooooooh soooooooooo nice!).
I came across a pattern and knew it was perfect.

I'm worried that because the yarns are so different I may have to alter the pattern and I don't want to waste my yarn.

Do I need to change the pattern or is it ok???

What weight is your snowflake? Looks like it comes in DK or Chunky. Since you have the yarn, knit a sample on about 20 sts and see if you get close to the gauge for the pattern which is 3 sts per inch, and if that's too loose or too tight a knit. That's the main criteria for subbing one yarn for another - will it knit up right for the pattern.

ok it says 'ultra light fashion chunky' on the front of the label and on the back there's a little diagram which will make more sense to you than me lol.

top: 10x10 cm
left: 19 rows
right: 4x4 ins
bottom: 14 sts

Okay that's the chunky yarn; the diagram says that you'll get 14 sts and 19 rows in 4". That should be okay with the pattern gauge, just try it and see.

I've just noticed that the weight of my yarn is 50g and the weight of the yarn in my pattern is 50g. Will it still work???

Sorry I just prefer to be safe rather than sorry

50g is the weight of the skein, and isn't always related to the weight of the yarn which refers to the thickness. Many yarns are put up in 50g balls, but the yardage will be different depending on how thick the yarn is. A sock yarn will have about 200 yds, a dk about 140 yds, a worsted around 100 and a bulky could have 80 yds. It looks like the original was a heavy worsted and what you have is a dk, but that could still work. Just cast on the hat and see how you like it after 3" or so.
